Cognitive arousal, the mental stimulation of scrolling social feeds, reading alarming news, or answering a work message, appears to be at least as disruptive as the light itself. This distinction matters practically. Switching your phone to warm-toned night mode and then spending forty minutes doom-scrolling is unlikely to produce meaningful sleep gains. The content, and the psychological engagement it triggers, is the variable that many self-help summaries leave out.
In Rio, the problem intersects with work culture in ways that are locally specific. With a significant portion of the city's workforce commuting between Barra da Tijuca and the Centro business district, journeys that can run 90 minutes each way on a good day, many professionals are logging into emails and messaging apps during late-evening hours simply because that is the first quiet window available. The result is that screen exposure and cognitive load peak precisely when the body is trying to begin its melatonin ramp-up.
Where Rio Is Responding
A handful of local institutions are taking the research seriously. The Instituto Estadual do Cérebro Paulo Niemeyer, on Rua do Resende in the Lapa neighbourhood, runs outpatient sleep disorder consultations that include structured guidance on digital hygiene, the specific term clinicians now prefer over the vague instruction to "put your phone down." Their protocol, developed in partnership with the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) in Manguinhos, recommends what researchers call a 90-minute digital sunset: no work messages, no news feeds, no streaming content in the final hour and a half before an intended sleep time.
The Parque do Flamengo has quietly become a site where this advice takes practical form. On weekday evenings, the stretch near the Marina da Glória fills with residents doing what Rio does best, moving outdoors, talking, watching the Guanabara Bay light fade. No algorithm required. Sleep specialists note that social interaction and light physical movement in the early evening are among the better-documented behavioural signals for improving sleep onset latency.
For anyone starting from scratch, the evidence-based entry points are modest and specific: keep the bedroom phone charger outside the room; set a single, consistent alarm and resist the urge to check it repeatedly; and treat the hour before sleep like the Instituto Niemeyer treats it, a non-negotiable clinical boundary, not a flexible guideline. Rio's night is long and beautiful. The research increasingly suggests the best way to enjoy it is to put the screen down first, and actually be present in it.
