Rio's Council Sports Centers Offer Dozens Weekly Group Exercise Classes
Council-run sports centers in Rio de Janeiro run dozens of weekly group classes that mix locals of all ages and fitness levels.
How we reported this
Rio de Janeiro city facilities recorded 48,200 registrations for group exercise classes in the first half of 2026, up 19 percent from the same period last year.
The increase tracks rising demand for low-cost sessions that run year-round regardless of weather, with residents citing both the social element and the fixed schedules that fit around work and family commitments.
Two sites stand out for consistent offerings. The Centro Municipal de Esportes Copacabana at Rua Barata Ribeiro 400 holds morning capoeira circles and evening Zumba sessions five days a week. Further north, the Ginásio Municipal da Tijuca on Avenida Maracanã 123 schedules resistance-band circuits and stretch classes on its indoor courts, drawing participants from the surrounding neighborhoods of Vila Isabel and Grajaú.
Class formats and access
Most sessions last 50 minutes and require only a towel and water bottle. Instructors rotate every eight weeks to keep routines fresh, and classes stay capped at 25 people to maintain spacing on the mats. The prefeitura posts updated timetables on its portal every Monday, allowing residents to book a spot up to seven days ahead through the online portal or by phone.
Fees remain fixed at R$18 per class or R$60 for a monthly pass that covers any municipal site. Seniors over 65 and students with valid ID pay half price. Last year the city counted 312,000 total attendances across all council venues, according to the Secretaria Municipal de Esporte e Lazer annual report released in March.
How to get started
Visitors can arrive 15 minutes early at either location to complete a short health questionnaire and receive a wristband for entry. Those who prefer to test one class first can pay the single-session rate on site with cash or Pix. Schedules for the coming month appear on the prefeitura site under the heading “Aulas Coletivas 2026”, and printed copies sit at the reception desks of both centers.
