College Sports Rio de Janeiro: How to Join UFRJ Teams

Registration for the 2026 college sports season at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro begins on July 15 at the Ilha do Fundão campus, giving students and local residents a direct path into team practices and competitions.

Interest in campus athletics has risen sharply since the start of the year, as universities expand offerings beyond traditional futebol to include volleyball, basketball and swimming amid tighter budgets for professional clubs. Residents near university grounds now see more pickup games and open trials that feed into official squads.

The UFRJ program draws athletes from nearby neighbourhoods including Cidade Universitária and Jacarepaguá, while the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro runs parallel sessions from its Gávea base that feed into inter-university matches at the Maracanãzinho arena. Both institutions require only a valid student ID or proof of residency within the city limits plus a basic medical certificate dated after June 1.

Registration Requirements

Participants must submit forms at the sports department office on the UFRJ campus between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays starting next week. A one-time fee of R$120 covers insurance and uniform access for the semester, with equipment such as cleats and balls supplied by the program. Last season 1,450 students signed up across both universities, according to internal tallies released in May.

Where to Train in Rio

Training takes place on the synthetic fields behind the UFRJ main library and at the PUC-Rio courts along Rua Marquês de São Vicente. Newcomers can attend two free introductory sessions before committing, and the schedule lists evening slots on Mondays and Wednesdays to accommodate working students. Those who complete the trial period receive team assignments by August 5 and begin league play the following month against squads from other Rio campuses.

Anyone meeting the basic criteria should bring identification and the medical form directly to the offices listed above rather than relying on online portals, which fill quickly each year.
